There has been a lot of publicity surrounding this movie. I’ve heard it’s the best movie of the year and I’ve heard it’s the worst wrestling movie in history. I’ve heard all the great stuff about this movie – and I’ve heard all the negative stuff about this movie. After watching the movie, I can certainly understand why there’s so many mixed feelings about it.
The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke, is definitely one of a kind. It’s the only wrestling movie ever made that puts more focus on the wrestler outside of the ring, than inside of the ring. Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Mikey Rourke) is captured, in this film, doing everything that a real wrestler does in the real world. His actions and decision making is so accurate to that of a real pro wrestler that not only is it scary – but at times, it’s embarrassing.
Please allow me to explain.
When watching scenes of this movie that were filmed inside a locker room – I cringed at the thought that I was looking at something so familiar that I could see myself in the scene. The way the wrestlers interact with one another and the idea that ANYWHERE can be a wrestling locker room. For example, the classroom they dress in, in the opening scene. The armory room they dress in – how tiny it was for all those guys to be jammed in there. That’s all real life. I’ve been in those dressing rooms. When I saw it for myself – it was like a cold slap in the face. (more…)
